I once wrote about my best year ever, explaining how I got everything that I thought I wanted and it wasnt what I thought.What do we do when this happens?I think we ought to remember what got us here in the first place - and maybe that was the point. This goes along with Lesson 4 when we talked about how we shouldmeasure the process, not just the results.In other words, dont get comfortable. The habits that make you successful are the saatkorn ones that allow you to succeed. And although this makes perfect sense, many of us forget this.We achieve a little bit of success, think much of ourselves, and forget to keep practicing. We get lazy, and as a result, we lose the very thing we worked so hard to attain.But wait. Havent you heard the saying, what got you here wont get you there? I think theres even a book about that. And thats true sometimes.Dont get comfortableSome things do change when you succeed.But a lot of things dont.Take relationships, for example. When you started dating someone, you do everything you can to be around that person. Maybe you write letters or emails or send the m text messages. In my case, I wrote songs for the girl who captured my heart (and eventually married her).But at some point, we get comfortable. Lazy. We take each other for granted, and the relationship starts to stagnate. Were busy its easy to find an excuse to not spend time together. Because, we think, that person will always be there.What do we do when we recognize this pattern?If were smart, we go back to the basics, to what got us here in the first place. We date our spouses again. We pursue them. We start writing letters and songs and sending text messages that say I love you for no reason at all.Sometimes what got you here is the only thing that will keep you here.The same is true with success.At the beginning, we tend to strive and hustle and work ourselves to the bone. And we love it. Its fun. Exciting, even. We have all this energy and passion - its almost infectious.But at some point, we achieve our goals. We get what we wanted. And for whatever reason, we think the r ules change. We get sophisticated.It is in these moments when we must discipline ourselves to stay scrappy.I remember working so hard in 2012 to make enough money to quit my job and write full-time. Then, as soon as I got what I wanted, I stopped writing for three months.Why?Its because I thought that once you achieve a goal, the work somehow becomes easier.Thats rarely true.Again, I will say it what got you here, keeps you here. Stay hungry.Look. Im not saying you cant relax or enjoy your achievements. Just dont get lazy and entitled about it. Stay humble. I recall not completely understanding the meaning of her words. I was looking for help in the middle of a workplace tornado, and here this individual was sharing philosophy. It turns out she was right. Years from now as you reflect on your career experience you will remember the people and teamwork and camaraderie and the experience of working together. What you will not remember or care about are the quarterly numbers, the budgets or the headaches. The journey of working and sharing and learning together will reign supreme in your memory. The challenge for many of us is how to keep that in context in the here-and-now and find purpose in our daily job activities as a manager. 5 Ideas to Find Meaning and Purpose in Your Work Recognize the Opportunity You Have to Positively Impact Someones Life Through Your Efforts as a Manager Taking a chance on someone or showing support for them after a failure can have long-lasting ripple effects in the lives of our coworkers. The manager who believed in my abilities as a young professional, to do a job at a much higher level in spite of my lack of experience gave me the gift of self-confidence. An individual I had no choice but to terminate looped back a decade later and offered that the respect I showed him in the process forced him to reevaluate where he had gone wrong. It was during that difficult situation that he decided to turn his career and life around. Look in the Rear-View Mirror Once per Year and Marvel at the Distance You and You Have Team Members Traveled and What You Created Along the Way Often, work feels like a never-ending rush to put out fires and resolve crises. Nonetheless, good teams led by active managers learn to strengthen their performance, improve their quality, innovate to try new things and slowly, day by day, reinvent themselves. One manager used the new fiscal year kick-off not to talk so much about goals looking forward, but to ask the team to look backward at the prior year and identify all of those things that worked and that they wanted to do more of in this upcoming period. The goals seemed easy to digest when considered through the filter of so many positive achievements and behaviors. Its been two weeks since our initial conversation, and he has spent a lot of time reviewing his JUMP results and thinking about what he ideally would like to be doing. After hours of consideration, talking to industry professionals, and researching role types, he has decided he wants to go into the field ofcorporate training.When it comes to changing careers, youre rarely going to be able to make a clean jump into your new, ideal role unless it is in a field related to your current job.So, it was time for us to map out how this j ob seeker would get from retail to corporate training.The First Step Is ResearchYou need to look at position descriptions and advertised jobs, focusing on what employers are looking for in terms of essential and desirable criteria. Note these down and think about your current skills and experience. Which of these criteria do you already meet, either in direct skills and experience or transferable skills and experience? In what areas do you need to develop? For the skills you need to develop, can this be done through on-the-job learning, or do you need to complete further education?Reach out to some people in the career you want. Make time to speak with them. Ask them about what their jobs are like on a day-to-day basis. What are some of the challenges? What does it take to be truly successful?Next, Make a PlanOnce you have an idea of the skills and experience you need to develop, make a plan for how todo that.The job seeker I was working with already had some transferable skills fro m training and developing his current sales team. He researched and enrolled in a training certificate program to gain nationally recognized skills. He also decided that once the program was completed, he would like to earnan MBA in order to improve his business knowledge.From here, he departureed to look for companies that had sales training departments and found an amazing opportunity with a business that delivers sales training to other businesses. After reaching out to the company, he secured a meeting, which then led toan interview. The hiring team was impressed by his motivation, and he was offered a role. This will give him the chance to grow and develop his training skills while he studies and improves his business knowledge. He plans to spend the next two years studying while working for this company. From there, he plans to start the search process to move into a corporate training role.Career change is a journey. It takes time to do it right, but it is worth every second if you want to change your life for the better. Potential sea-duty is an obvious consideration, but so are the jobs you are qualified to do upon entry into the Navy. The Navy will spend significant time and money training and preparing you for a new career, but having a skill set going into the Navy can perhaps guide you toward your ideal job goals. For instance, language skills, college education, medical skills, and other skills obtainable in the civilian world can enhance the transition into the Navy in your favor. What do you bring to the table? Getting to the Navy Getting into the Navy is bedrngnis an easy task.Aside from medical and physical standards, there are height and weight standards, criminal standards, as well as academic standards. The Navy requires a ? minimum ASVAB score of 35 to enlist in the regular Navy. Only a 31 is required for Naval Reserve, but you will need a 50 at l east if you only have a General Education Diploma (GED). However, your chances of being accepted are much better if you score higher. The ASVABis the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, a series of tests designed to determine for which Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) or job, a recruit is best suited. Here are a few of the highlights to consider when thinking about enlisting in the Navy. Enlistment Incentives Each branch of the military needs to ensure that their new recruits are bringing them needed skills and that they dont have too much of one skill and not enough of another. If any of the critical skills become scarce, the Department of Defense offers a financial incentive in the form of bonuses. These bonuses vary depending on manning level and any conflicts the U.S is involved in, but the Navy does offer enlistment bonuses when warranted. Its best to check with your recruiting office about the most current enlistment bonus options. Basically - what does the N avy need to most? If you fit the mold for that job, you are in luck, however, be wary of the recruiter who guides you to the job you have no interest in as the Navy will work hard to fill needed billets even with people seeking other jobs. Job Opportunities The Navy has more than 80 enlisted jobs, which they call ratings. Job classifications are handled a little differently in the Navy than in the other branches of the U.S. military, with many ratings divided into sub-specialties, rather than breaking them out into separate jobs (as is common in the Army). These are called Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs). Basic Training Pros and Cons The Navy only has one location for enlisted basic training the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, which is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee.Obviously, a Winter class at Navy boot camp will be frigid. Summers will be hot and humid typically. Spring and Fall will be mild so consider your dep arture date if possible. However, even in the cold of the Winter and the heat of the Summer, much of Navy boot camp is conducted indoors, which makes sense when you consider that much of Navy life and duty is spent inside a ship or submarine. The recruit training command processes some 54,000 recruits through Navy boot camp every year. Get in Shape Before Boot Camp Do not assume the Navy will get you in shape from a de-conditioned sedentary person.You need to have an ability to run (at least 1.5 miles without stopping), do push-ups and crunches, and have the ability to swim and tread water.If you fail any of the physical standards, you will get to spend any free time doing extra workouts early or late in the day.So arrive in shape DuringNavy boot camp, recruits will take their initial swim test, learn details about the Navy rank and ratings, and go through intense physical conditioning. Theyll learn military drills, shipboard safety such as firefighting, and receive weapons trai ning. Its intense and challenging, and Navy boot camp is not for everyone. Before you can depart for Navy basic training, you must pass an initial fitness assessment they give you are the recruiters office. Once again, do not assume that the minimum standards on any fitness test is the peak you should strive to achieve. If your goal is the minimum standard, you will be borderline pass / fail and likely on a bad day, fail the test when it counts for your graduation or advancement. Assignment Opportunities The Navy has some 51 major cousines in the continental United States (CONUS). They also have bases in Hawaii, Bahrain, Italy, Cuba, Greece, Guam, Japan, South Korea, Spain, and England. Many Navy assignments are not actually to bases, but rather sailors are assigned to a ship or submarine, which considers the base its home port.Nearly all Navy bases are located in beach towns with access to large bodies of water (ocean, bay, gulf).If you like beach towns, you will like the Navy. Where you are stationed will largely depend on your job, so get to know the specifics of each rating and where its sailors train. To that end, sailors work with Navy detailers, who are in charge of all assignments for a particular job community and rate range. Typically, sailors rotate from a period of shore duty to a period of sea duty. The actual length of the rotations varies by job, but usually averages 36 months of shore duty, followed by 36 months of sea duty. The majority of Navy deployments are at sea on Navy ships and submarines. Educational Opportunities Everyone who enlists on active duty in any branch of the military is eligible for the G.I. Bill. Also, the Navy offers a college fund for recruits who enlist in jobs the Navy considers understaffed, adding money to monthly G.I. Bill entitlements. The Navy also gives tuition assistance for college courses taken off duty. Courses offered on-base are by actual colleges and universities and generally give credit for milit ary training, with flexible credit transfer policies. The Navy even brings along civilian college professors on some of the larger ships (such as aircraft carriers) to offer college courses while at sea. Other Things to Consider - Cool Jobs Navy Special Operations - The Navy has the Navy SEALs, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Divers, and Rescue Swimmers. If Special Operations interests you, they are looking for people to fill these jobs.Naval Nuclear Power - The Navy will teach you to be a Nuclear Engineer, and Nuclear trained to run the power plants that propel the submarines and aircraft carriers of the Fleet. If you are a math and science whiz kid, the Navy has a home for you. Naval Air - There are most airplanes in the Navy than the Air ForceIf flying jets, luftschraube planes, and helicopters on and off ships is something that excites you, there is training to enable you to gain those skills. In fact, the Careerist states that this flatters them and humanizes you as their manager. This is a great position for a manager to be in. You never want your team to think that you dont understand or that you no longer care for their opinion.Another great thing you can do is to seek out management training. Just because you got the promotion doesnt mean you are 100 percent ready to take on all of the responsibilities bestowed upon you. You may have all of the skills needed for the position, but you may have no idea how to manage people- especially those you previously worked with. Dont be afraid to admit that you need some training if you do.To avoid the possibility of giving unfair treatment to certain members of your team, you need to make roles and responsibilities very clear right from the start. That includes your own as well Make sure that everyone on your team knows what their job is and what is expected of them. Make it clear to them what you expect and hold everyone in the same regard. As stated earlier, just because yo u were very close with Bob before your promotion doesnt meant that Bob can get away with being chronically tardy everyday- while Phil gets reprimanded for doing the same. This can cause huge rifts in your team and reflects poorly on you as a manager.Overall, remember to always be professional but dont forget who you were before you received this promotion. Maintain good communication with your former colleagues and now team members, and continue to show interest in their own progression. Janney Coupler Named 267th ASME Landmark Janney Coupler Named 267th ASME Landmark Janney Coupler Named 267th ASME LandmarkASME will mark this years Rail Safety Week, which will be observed from Sept. 23 to 29, with the designation of the Janney coupler as the Societys 267th Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Rail Safety Week was launched last year by rail safety education nonprofit Operation Lifesaver Inc. in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation and other organizations.Patented in 1873 by Civil War veteran Eli Janney, the Janney coupler is being recognized for its impact on rail safety and its technological significance. The interlocking coupler, which resembled a curled human hand, was the successor to the link and pin coupler, a device that required rail workers to stand between train cars while joining them an extremely dangerous procedure that resulted in numerous injuries and deaths. The Janney coupler is being designated as ASMEs 267th H istoric Mechanical Engineering Landmark in recognition of its impact on rail safety and its technological significance.
