Romance Isnt Just For February

Romance Isnt Just For February February may be gone from the years calendar, but that doesnt mean romance should go right along with it.  Think about it.  Most things we are involved with dont produce good results if done only during one month of the year.  Gardening?  All the plants would die.  Working out to get that great body?  Eleven months of no exercise will quickly turn those muscles to flab.  And if youre a host to a furry critter, you surely dont plan on care and feeding  just one month of the year. If youre lucky enough to have the regular company of someone youre more than a little fond of, listen up!  Its time you treated that highly-valued relationship with the same care you do your houseplants, your body, and your pets. Here are three tips to help keep the warm fuzzies going all year round. Show Appreciation And  Intimacy Daily Appreciation and intimacy are not separate concepts.  Think of them more as levels of the same thing.  You can show appreciation in many simple ways, from just a mindful thank you to notes that tell your partner how much you appreciate them. Intimacy is just a leveled up place of appreciation.  Those caresses and soft touches show not only your love, but your appreciation for the physical and emotional connection you have with your partner.  Romantic lingerie  can be a part of the scene, and gifts of an intimate nature just help to show both the physical and emotional appreciation you have for them. Everyone Loves Surprises Theres nothing like a surprise to bring a smile to your face.  Remember those times when you let out a little shriek of joy because theyd made the effort to do something a little extra special?  Thats just like a ray of nourishing sunshine to your relationship. One of my favorite surprises has always been finding little notes secretly stashed in my purse, laptop, or even in my smartphone case.  Its the perfect way to deliver a dose of your  love when your partner gets the little message when they get to work, or open their laptop for work. Take Romantic Trips There are vacations.  You know what those are like.  Tons of fun to plan, and full of excitement and new things.  Thats all great, but if youre like me, you find that too often you need a vacation to recover from the vacation! So instead of or in addition to the regular vacation, try planning a romantic getaway.  You can google that and come up with a ton of possibilities.  The common thread is that theyre usually extended weekend retreats.  And instead of focusing on places and things, the focus is on you and your partner.  You make it a special time to re-connect with your partner on an intimate level and remember all the great things you love about them. So dont let your romance wilt while all the flowers of Spring are budding and blooming.  Start a tradition of nurturing your relationship as you would anything that you want to grow, flourish, and be around for a long time to come. 3 Common Branding Mistakes of the Digital Age - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

3 Common Branding Mistakes of the Digital Age - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Most professionals and business owners who use social media don’t have a grasp on branding. They didn’t go to school to learn it and it’s not their strength. Branding is how you define yourself with the goal of being distinct from other people or companies. Your name, your picture and your content define who you are online and they make up your digital trail that people can follow if they’re interested in you. Since there are so many people online vying for attention and success, it’s become harder to build a unique and interesting brand. It’s easy to make mistakes online because you get so wrapped up in connecting with new customers and technology, both of which are changing constantly. By taking a step back and analyzing your current strategy, you can be more effective, save time and stand out in the sea of Internet clutter. Here are the three most common branding mistakes I see companies commit: To read the rest of  this post, visit my branding column on  American Express OPEN Forum. 7 actionable ways to build resilience in the workplace - Debut

7 actionable ways to build resilience in the workplace - Debut It goes without saying, right? Working life isnt perfect. Even if you are doing what you love, youll encounter obstacles, challenges and setbacks thatll test the most jovial of employees. This is why its so important to build resilience. What is resilience? The Harvard Business Review defines resilience as the ability to recover from setbacks, adapt well to change, and keep going in the face of adversity. Essentially, its your ability to keep calm and carry on in the face of any s*** life throws at you. Tough At The Top  by Sarah Bond and Gillian Shapiro explored the theme of resilience. In the book, Bond and Shapiro asked 835 employees in Britain what things would test their resilience the most. According to the responses, 75% said the biggest drain was managing difficult people or office politics at work. This was followed by stress through overwork, and receiving personal criticism. Resilience is really important. Why? Because theres only one thing you can control in life: yourself. Tough times are inevitable. Its how to get back up after youve been knocked down thats tricky to nail. Here are seven tips on how to build resilience in your career to hopefully help you along. 1. Seek understanding from your setbacks Succumbing to despair after being reprimanded by your superior, or getting some unexpected scathing feedback is easy. Heck, its only human, after all. Let yourself process the initial emotions, may it be sadness, anger and confusion. The key here is to not stay in this headspace for too long. This is called mental agility. It is the ability to switch gears in your mind from  reacting to stress to  responding  to stress. Reacting, after all, is instinctive and emotionally-driven. Responding however, is a more objective approach. Heres an example. You work hard to build a kick-ass proposal for a potential commercial partner, but the lead goes cold. They stop responding to your calls and emails, and this leads to a potential source of income going dry. After you rant/have a de-stress pint, detach from the situation and reflect. Perhaps their lack of response was actually a sign they wouldnt be great to work with, and youd dodged a bullet. Were not saying everything happens for a reason, because that would be, well, pretty patronising. However, it is possible for you to learn from all your mistakes and challenges. Its up to you to find out what those lessons are. 2. Build a strong support network It was poet John Donne who first coined the saying, no man is an island. That platitude has been used time and time again to the point of cliché, we know. But it wouldnt have stuck around that long if there wasnt an element of truth to it. When Ive had a particularly crap day, and Im trying not to break down in front of my colleagues, I step outside to call my parents. I happen to live around six thousand miles away from mine, but I know that they will 100% pick up the phone, and vice versa if theyre struggling. Oftentimes, talking a problem out with them, my sister, partner and friends will help me see it from a new perspective. Granted, some of us are not so lucky. I see my privilege very clearly in times like this however, support networks dont have to look so conventional. Mentors and lending ears can come in the shape of your colleagues, acquaintances heck even your Twitter network. Dont be an island. Reach out for help, and when its time for you to do so, provide that support to others. 3. Try to establish a good work/life balance You know whatll take a toll on you?  A bad work/life balance. Heres why: if your lifes purpose is tied to only one thing, youll be worse for wear when you encounter things that knock that purpose. Its like what they say, right? Dont put all of your eggs in one basket. Find hobbies outside of work that bring you joy. Find a side hustle that fulfills you. Nurture the relationships you have with others outside the office, and try new things. Having a good work/life balance will help you build resilience at work because itll help you see that theres just more to life. After all, you can hash out the stress from the day at the gym, or bake your worries away. 4. Take care of your health This is key. Resilience isnt just about being able to respond its also about building your overall mental strength. Which wont be easy if your immune system is kicking your butt every month with a new cold. Im one to talk I live a fairly sedentary stare-at-a-screen-for-hours lifestyle. At one point I was experiencing a high level of burnout at work. Panic attacks, chest pains and fatigue plagued me, and really dragged down my spirit. So I decided to go for a walk every day at work, drink less caffeine and eat more mindfully. Honestly? I saw the positive effects of those small changes pretty much immediately. Physical and mental health are one and the same, and tackling them holistically is a good way to build resilience. Which brings us nicely onto our next point. 5. Be compassionate to yourself Lets say it together now. We  ?? are ?? only ?? human ??. You will make mistakes. You will encounter difficulties.  If youre feeling upset and angry, thats totally normal. Beating yourself up for over-reacting or getting emotional will only serve to add to any burdens currently plaguing you. Take breaks. Take time off. Allow yourself to feel compassionate for the no. 1 person you need to worry about you. Being resilient doesnt mean you need to be steely-faced in the face of adversity all the time. When knocked down, boxers still need a recovery period, right? Its the same here. 6.  Create a responsive comeback  plan When youre ready for it, its time for you to be the comeback kid of the century. So, maybe you messed up at work. Or maybe somethings happened thats knocked you off your feet. Once youve taken the time to reflect and relax, its time to take action. Brainstorm your responses, and plan out potential outcomes. See how you can take back your career narrative. For example, if you managed to tick off your manager by accident, work harder at your KPIs (key performance indicators) to show him or her what youre worth. Ignoring setbacks and obstacles for too long isnt the one, pals. If you can take what youve been given and transcend the troubles, youll have truly developed resilience. 7. Keep working at resilience, because it will be a journey You are not going to develop resilience overnight. It will be like growing a pearl in an oyster slow and steady, but with each day youll get stronger. Compassion comes into this again, in a way. Be kind to yourself when you react instead of respond. Keep reflecting. Re-draw your comeback plan if it doesnt work out the way you want it to. When I left my first job, I was a bit of a mess emotionally. Loads of things happened there that I may have reacted badly too. Fast-forward to now, I feel like Ive developed  more  resilience than ever. Ive got a long way to go though. And you know what? So do you and thats perfectly OK. Say hi to us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn! We’d love to hear from you.

Salary negotiation research tools

Salary negotiation research tools Salary negotiation research tools Salary negotiation research tools November 30, 2009 by Career Coach Sherri Thomas 4 Comments In my previous post I started discussing how to know if youre getting paid what you are worth. Today I will give you some tools to use in your research and some tips to help in your salary negotiations. Find out what the position is currently paying for similar work in similar environments (including positions inside and outside the company) through * On-line job search engines (e.g. Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, TheLadders.com, etc.) * Company websites (your company and others in the same industry) * Business Journals * Specialized Trade Publications * Personal networking contacts * Newspapers/Classified ads * Published salary surveys Below are five excellent reference websites that offer salary calculators and reference guides. You may be required to subscribe to the service in order to obtain accurate, high quality information: http://www.salary.com (also look at link to Cost of Living comparisons if moving) http://www.realrates.com/rate_sur.htm http://www.rileyguide.com/salguides.html http://www.payscale.com/?src=G33x http://jobmarket.nytimes.com/pages/jobs/?excamp=GGJMsalarycalculator Once you have the salary data, the best indicator of the market place is to combine a number of different salary ranges set for the same job by at least a half-dozen employers rather than just relying on one company’s salary range. Ideally, the more salary ranges for the same job in the same geographical area that you can compare, the better. Then, add all the minimums together and divide by the number of salaries you’re comparing. Do the same for the midpoints (the average of the minimum and maximum), and maximums. This will give you the range of the job’s the market value. Now you can determine where in the range your current salary is. The norm is that the midpoint (the average dollars of the minimum and maximum of the range) is ideally where you should be after 5 or so years in that position. This is not an absolute but more of a goal to assess your value. And finally The second thing you need to understand (and this is more difficult) to determine whether you are at the high end or low end of the pay scale is that various companies may offer different salary ranges due to the company’s internal salary policies and practices. There may be hiring policies stating that no matter how much experience you have, the best starting salary offer would be no more than a small percentage above the minimum starting point. Of course, this is to help avoid internal salary issues. Also, despite your position and responsibilities, if the company has not kept up with the market movement for its current employees then they are not very likely to pay more to a new hire than they do for current employees. So even though a company may recognize and value your experience and skill-set, the salary offer may be minimal to avoid any potential internal salary issues. After you have done your research and are more educated about your worth in the marketplace, it may be a good time to schedule a meeting with your manager to inquire about a potential pay raise! Now, go forth and prosper… and know your worth in the marketplace.
